After downloading the core ftp follow the below instructions. If you are not having the core FTP, download it from the following link http://www.coreftp.com/download.html You have to download the Core FTP LE 1.3c : free version. After the core FTP download is over, install this FTP client software in your machine. After the installation is over, open the core FTP software This will show you the site manger screen Click on New Site button which is in the left bottom of the screen On the top right hand side, you can see sitename box In the sitename box type the sitename,In the HOS/IP/URL type ip address of the company. then type the username in the username and then passowrd Click on "Connect” which is the bottom of the screen

The suggestions are meant for using an FTP client software. But installing and maintaining FTP server is entirely different. As for your problem of sending files to your friend, it will be far simpler sending your files through email or messenger. Otherwise, you have to buy some FTP space from some domain host. That can be used for uploading and downloading.

As far as I know you need to have an FTP website/space. I use core FTP (client) for uploading and downloading to my website and it is hosted on a FTP server space I bought with the web domain.
If you want to send file to your friend's computer, then you should buy a website and space and then you should upload to the server and your friend will download it from there.
However, I think you can as well send it through email or yahoo messenger provided you know the limitation of size.
There might be free servers like geocities (though geo allows only particular file type upload I think) which will help you to store into the web and for your friend to download from there.

Hi Voiceinterpreter!
Could you tell me from whom you bought the domain space for FTP. Is the speed is satisfactory? I too would like to buy one. Awaiting your response. Thanks!! |

| "Core FTP sucks" .. i mean it really sucks...if you are pro..go for something better..well there are better softwares (freewares) for starters you can try Filezilla (i luv it for its simplicity and hell its really fast..and plus its miles better thn Core or anything out there) and as far as FTP server is concerned ...well here is the thing ppl...the server can be set up for free...no cost..nothing zero, but its only for personal use (it has some users restrictions)...i have tried it and it definetly works, so well check out the Digit issue of November 2005 (i dunno exactly when..i think its November) it has the detailed instruction regarding putting up a FTP server... |

Broadman, I think most of Indian web hosts are giving good service. Our broadband connections are good enough. They usually give some discounts once in a while too. I bought space from net4domains.com. It is working well, though their email support is not that good. It costs about Rs. 1500/- for the domain name and 50 Mb of ftp space(www space included) + 250 Mb of email space (useless for us)

Hi,
There is no need to buy an ftp space from any service provider by paying money in thousands. One can create their own ftp server on their own systems using the existing broadband connections ( with either dynamic or static ip address ) which he / she has.
This can be quite helpful for mt companies or medical transcriptionists themselves bcse they can get an ftp space of an entire hard disk which they have ( like 80GB or 100 GB ) and more instead of paltry 50, 100, or 500 MB offered by service providers. Also mts can ask their work providers to upload files into their systems itself which is also an ftp server thereby resulting in more efficiency.
For more details on how to create an ftp server on their own systems one can mail me at girish@amadeustech.com and i will let u know the details. Here the possiblites are endless since u r in control of your ftp server. Very well suited for mt companies, medical transcriptionists, QA's, and those who need to share files. A nominal fees would be charged for sharing this information regarding on how to setup an ftp server on your own systems ! Yes your own systems !!
I will also be providing the necessary software to setup the ftp server and also the training on how to maintain it.
Minimum requirements to setup your own ftp server would be a Pentium II and above based system with 256 MB RAM ( 512 MB preffered ), 512 Kbps broadband internet with port 21 opened ( incoming and outgoing ) and any Windows operating system ( Windows 2000 Professional preffered ).
Regards, Girish.
